[BRISBANE] A FRESH NEW START

Back at my favourite hideout in Brisbane: The Passion Tree Cafè. This time round I skipped the shaved ice and had my froyo cravings satiated. Regrettably it wasn’t the best of days for the girl serving my froyo. I get it, we all have our bad days right? Paulo Coelho’s biography saved me from boredom; I had to tune out the incessant chatter all around me, mostly in Korean, but hey not complaining. Anything’s better than listening to repeated broadcasts of year-end tragedies and disasters on BBC. An hour later I hit the streets to check out Aussie’s post-season sales.

Dinner was: Roast Chicken Supreme! I’ve just learnt that the PieFace round the corner of my hotel is open 24 hours … yay to a happy belly any time of day! Savoured it whilst filling in my diary for 2015.

Skipping all the fluffy resolutions I do every single year with less than half fulfilled 365 days later – maybe I’m just jaded by impracticalities of ideals we set for ourselves but fall short of, so freaking often.

In a few hours I’m heading to Christchurch, New Zealand. As much as I’m not looking forward to spending my last few hours of 2014 in the air, or counting down to 2015 35,000 feet in the sky, it’s pretty exciting to be chasing time down south, where time passes faster than it does in Southeast Asia (by a whole 5 hours). Being faster than time – a fresh new start to what I hope to emulate for the new year.

Hello 2015 I think I’m more than ready for you! Who else is with me?

Viktoria Jean

P.S Probably won’t be updating as often in the days to come as I’m heading to Bangkok for a getaway with my favourite ex-colleagues. Follow me on instagram @silhouettekiss for faster updates teehee.

Chocolateria San Churro, Brisbane

Got a major kick out of having churros in Brisbane! Finally satisfying my cravings for both dark chocolate and cinnamon churros and where better to have these? Australia’s most famous chocolateria!

Macarons, truffles, pralines, cakes, fudge bizcocho, smoothies, coffees in all sizes, flavours and shapes. Take your pick. Now that I’m hungry, can I stay in Brisbane, please?

이 카페는 마카롱, 케이크, 초콜릿, 커피의 다양한 맛을 판매하고 있습니다. 여기를 음식을 날 배가된다. 여기에 내가 살 수 있을까?

Now to make you hungry too…
배고픈 만들기 위해… 츄 로스와 다크 초콜릿 소스!

That, my friends, has got to be the best churros I’ve ever had. Also, I loved its teak wood tables and straight-backed chairs. Perfectly conducive place for studying or a quick catch-up with friends.

지금까지먹었던 최고의 츄 로스 로… 이것은 또한 대단히 잘 설계된 카페이다. 확실히본 카페에서 공부할 것. 친구를 충족하기 위해본 카페에 돌아 오는 생각 해.

Passion Tree Cafe, Brisbane

It’s 36°C in Brisbane & I’m mad happy to find a cafè with shaved ice, desserts and cold cold coffee! Incredibly spacious with comfy throw pillows along wall benches, the cafè is popular amongst local Koreans and Asians. We found the place on a warm Tuesday afternoon, drawn to the sweet aroma of macarons.

20140123-014450.jpg

Their mad selection of pastries were snatched up the moment they hit the shelves. A lady in front of me in the queue bought 17.

20140123-014502.jpg

What’s more famous is their 팥빙수 (patbingsu), or shaven ice, a very popular dessert in Korea! It’s a rare dish in Australia and Passion Tree is one of the only cafès offering this yummy dessert!

20140123-014508.jpg

I ordered an iced latte and we shared this huge Green Tea 팥빙수 — green tea flavoured shaven ice lavishly topped with almonds, macadamias, honey corn flakes, red bean paste and a huge dollop of green tea ice cream! And when I say huge, I mean it. The glass bowl is about the size of a regular fish tank.

Passion Tree’s 팥빙수 is as close to the originals I’ve had in Seoul, so I must say it’s really darn good. The dessert was basically what we had for lunch besides the meal we had onboard during the flight. It was really filling so I’d suggest sharing it. I’d definitely come back to try their tiramisu and other patbingsu flavours (mango, passion fruit etc!) The cafe’s not that hard to locate once you’re within the Brisbane CBD area, it’s flanked by Queen Street and Albert Street, right next to Myer Centre. Dine away!

Salads Galore: Brisbane

Jetlag & eye-bags-inducing fatigue always compels me to choose junk food over my greens. Couldn’t stay asleep for as long as I wanted in Brisbane, so I was up early to hunt for good coffee.
Found: Smoked Salmon Salad from Green Bean, King George Square. Soooo yummy!
20131107-093224.jpg
Yet again I had sooo many consecutive days of unhealthy eating and an irreparably screwed-up sleep cycle!! Need a mad-healthy diet to make up for the toll that jet-setting is taking on my health.

Brisbane, King George Square

Someday I’d wish to be a true backpacker in Brisbane;
just my haversack & laptop for a couple of weeks.
Too many amazing streets to stroll along, colors and sights to see,
vintage buildings to admire, and entertaining buskers to applaud.
Liberal-minded people to talk to and be impressed by.
Talents abound and magic to be discovered.

Pictorial Walk-through…of BRISBANE!!
Because I literally went everywhere on foot.

For many reasons, I’m so thankful this came out blurred.
Firstly I was out gallivanting alone right after a much-needed sleep.
This bunch of men came up to ask for a photo, as if they’ve never seen Asians in their land.
So they took this shot with my camera as well as this person’s phone.
I was so afraid they were gonna run away with my digicam.
Still, strange yet funny. photo DSCN1692.jpg

AMAZING BUSKERS!! I met a magician that day which amazed the hell out of me.
This band, PLUDO, were just as entertaining.
Will be uploading videos of them soon! They have their own CDs and gigs,
but they’re doing street busking to garner more popularity. photo DSCN1742.jpg

My take-home drystores and snacks.
I was up till late writing that night at Pullman Brisbane King George Street,
and barely slept although the hotel bed was, as always, incredibly comfortable. photo DSCN1746.jpg

Brisbane was incredible. I’ll be back soon enough.
Just landed Taipei…
And next up, Copenhagen!!!
I’m quite tired to be very frank, but the adrenaline sets in whenever I touch down on somewhere new.
Where’s the sense of adventure if you’re out there and not exploring??
