[PARIS] oo7.CARETTE

“When good Americans die, they go to Paris,’ the ghost said, after taking a drag on a small cigarette.”
― Karen Chance, Embrace the Night

The sky decided on delivering a full-blown shower and a trio of very drenched Paris Explorers braved their way on foot across the Eiffel Tower and towards Trocadero. Pretty much everywhere in Paris’ city centre you’ll be able to locate patisseries and cafes that are great for alfresco-dining.

A walking distance from Tour de Eiffel is The Carette Paris where locals and tourists alike can be seen nursing a cuppa, having pre-dinner drinks along the pavement portico, or enjoying a full-course dinner in its premises. Its interior decor is made up of beautiful pristine whites in stark contrast to the red velvet cushions and dark brown mahogany woods of their lounges and seats, which in my opinion is the classiest interior colour combination ever.

Dinner was: iced chocolate, almond and cinnamon infused hot milk, a slice of insanely rich opera cake, a piping hot onion and cheese soup as well as assorted macarons!P1070099

A handful of pistachio, raspberry, dark chocolate and sea salt caramel, rose, and fudge cake macarons. My favourite was the pistachio. So yummy! ^^ See how Paris has spoilt me on the dessert front? Overloading on good pastries is a given when in Paris! They have an impressive collection of macarons on offer, you can never taste them all.

And then there was this: the opera cake. I can never have another coffee/chocolate cake without thinking of this one.

Guylian Belgian Chocolate Cafè

Sydney Guylian Cafe

Sydney Guylian Cafe Strawberry Tart

Sydney is home to this restaurant slash patisserie bearing the name of a famed household chocolate brand. Guylian Cafè didn’t disappoint, probably as the tarts we ordered came at a time where we were too hungry to be picky. The glazed strawberries didn’t taste as fresh as I’d imagined. But for a quick spike of blood glucose the dessert certainly worked its sugar-laden miracles.

[THAILAND] oo5.H Bistro @ Hansar Samui

I’m hella fortunate to have Thai friends who know all the best hideouts and dining places. While waiting for a couple more friends to touchdown in Koh Samui, we dined at the beachfront H Bistro at Hansar Resort. Its French Mediterranean menu boasts the likes of grilled Hokkaido Scallops, pan-roasted Miyazaki sirloin, smoked duck prosciutto, white asparagus soup with langoustine and white truffle. oil. Best of all, it’s amazing close to Samui’s open-air international airport, so it’s a great place to hangout before catching your flight or for filling your tummies upon touching down.

H Bistro at Hansar Samui

H Bistro is directly adjacent to Hansar’s indoor pool, whicb faces the ocean and Koh Samui’s Bophut Beach. The post-monsoon winds were crazy, we chose to sit indoors instead.

Bophut Beach is lined with restaurants after restaurants targeted at tourists, offering a major selection of fusion and seafood-centred cuisines. Loved the ambience at H Bistro! Plus it’s so near to the sea, we took a good long stroll after our meal before we set off to pick up our friends. Its lunch a la carte differs from its dinner menu, which boasts more main courses than its usual lunch set! 5 days seriously isn’t enough to try everything on Ko Samui!!

[THAILAND] oo4.Beyond The Sea, Siamese Brasserie

BEYOND THE SEA, Siamese Brasserie

The entire week spent in Koh Samui, we basically feasted all day long on authentic Thai food and fresh-from-the-ocean seafood. The high tides plus bad weather made it nearly impossible for water-sports, so we cancelled our initial plans to take the open-sea scuba-diving license exams. On our first morning we drove to ShaSa Resort for the best mango sticky rice on the island. The resort’s incredibly enticing infinity pool is the first sight that greets all diners and guests, followed by a crazy bird’s eye view of the ocean and beach. The restaurant serves a fusion of Thai, Siamese and Western cuisines but they are best known for Kaw Neaw Ma Muang (mango stickies). I particularly enjoyed the island mojito and the incredibly warmth service from the ever-smiley hosts.

The thing I love most about resorts on islands is that every single square feet is photo-worthy. If you’re tired of swimming in sodium-laden ocean water, the pool’s great at ShaSa! With an insane view to boost 🙂 It’s no secret, I LOVE THAILAND!!

The Cafè Braun, Mondsee

Hungry for apple strudels and a steaming mug of hot chocolate and coffee? The Cafè Braun was our mandatory pit-stop on a tour of landmarks from the 1965 film musical, Sound of Music!
DSCN3503

‘Twas a rainy mid-afternoon, and we ran from Mondsee Abbey (a quick 50m dash) into the welcoming embrace of Cafè Braun, where the aroma of vanilla syrup and freshly roasted coffee jolted our olfactory senses into working overtime.

Within minutes of ordering, the prompt waitress had our strudel with vanilla sauce delivered. It was truly heavenly!!

Ugly food pictures aside, the apple strudel tasted wayyyyy better than it looks. The flipping cold weather commanded the need for hot chocolates and wiener.

This small-town cafè is everything you can ask for: the apple strudel is next to the best I’ve ever had (the first on my list being Corica’s Apple Strudel from Perth)! The beverages were simply divine and the interior cosy and welcoming.
Definitely one of those places you have to try, at least once in your lifetime.

New Century of Perfume Snobbery

Attended an event for Silver Lining by Atkinsons London at the Bacchanalia this afternoon.

My mom adores their emblematic fragrance, the 24 Old Bond Street; I’m pretty glad she will keep it because it’s a little too smoky (oak-casked whisky, as described) for my daily use.

However I do like their tagline:
Drawing on 200 years of English eccentricity, style and impeccable manners, Atkinsons is now ushering in a new century of perfume snobbery

I was more taken by Fashion Decree, a lighter fragrance of silk tree blossom and patchouli.

What a book! I salute the British pride in upholding fine mannerisms.
